School Festivals...

September is the season of school festivals, it seems. Besides the normal showcase of students' work, the Japanese school festival seems to invariably involve school choruses by all students, brass bands and stage plays. Performances involving teachers in silly costumes and hilarious numbers seem to be pretty popular as well. And in my impression, open days in Singapore schools are pretty much free activity, while Japanese schools probably have a planned schedule of activities.

My first school festival was at Ohno JHS. Walked into students rehearsal for what they call "free stage" (rock/pop songs performances) and can't help but feel a sense of admiration towards them. While teachers are around to keep check, preparation work, rehearsal practice and even equipment like guitar and sound system were almost completely done by the students themselves. They seem so talented, capable and confident to me. Can't help but feel a bit inferior when I think about how incapable I am, compared to these kids.

Went to enkai with the Ohno teachers after the festival. It was great! Although some of them did 'open up' a little too much. Still, I really enjoyed myself and the company.
